My name is Eric Raué and I am a game design addict. I’m currently freelancing as a programmer for mobile games and working on my own projects, both digital and non-digital. In the future I plan to work with designers and publishers to bring their games to tablets.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Science from Simon Fraser University, with a major in Computing Science and minor in Interactive Arts. Between classes I found myself regularly discussing game design and development with friends. It wasn’t enough for me so I co-founded the SFU Game Developers Club to bring like minded individuals together.

Whenever I have the opportunity I participate in 48 hour game jams such as the Global Game Jam. To this date I have participated in over 15 game jams creating a variety of games from action games to strategy games.

How did you get into game design?

My interest in designing games started when I was around 10 years old. Prior to that I had played many video games but never thought to design one myself let alone make a career out of it. The defining moment for me was playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. When Link grows up in the game it really made me think about what I wanted to do in the future. I taught myself how to program, to draw, and even attempted to learn how to compose music. Everything I could do to realize my dream of making games.

Designing board games has been a hobby up until 2012. Then I started to realize these games were more fun than my “real” video game projects I was developing. I’ve shifted my focus away from action games to turn based strategy games.

How do you approach game design?

I usually start with mechanics and try to find something that is original and interesting to me. I’ll test out the mechanics briefly and then come up with a theme to complement the mechanics. Sometimes I’ll impose arbitrary constraints such as cards-only or one-type-of-unit. I like to design card drafting games with special abilities but I’m starting to explore other types of games.
